STONE SIDING TYPES
There are not only a variety of types of stone finishes to choose from but there are also several types of stone siding. Below is a list of the most common and some information about each type.
SOLID STONE OR NATURAL STONE SIDING
Solid or natural stone siding is one of the oldest types of home sidings. The benefits of natural stone is its superior durability and of the authentic look of naturally occurring stone. Natural stone also brings the challenge of excessive weight, and the labor-intensive harvesting of solid stone (some are done by hand) requires alternatives in order to reduce costs of shipping, and to reduce the time it takes to complete the job . MANUFACTURED STONE SIDING / VENEER STONE
Any alternative to natural stone must first look like natural stone. Manufactured stone is a great alternative to real stone and helps to limit some of the natural stone drawbacks. They are easier to install, offers a much greater variety of styles to choose from, is lighter weight, is easier to cut and is less expensive than its natural alternative. Manufactured stones is typically based on a cement mold that is cast and finished to look like real stone. Be careful not to confuse Veneer Stone and Faux Veneer Stone. Faux veneer stone is made to look like veneer stone but is not and is usually made from a product that is more like Styrofoam than stone.
NATURAL STONE CLADDING
This variety of stone siding is offered not in harvested stone, but rather in cut-to-size units from larger slabs. A popular type of cladding of this type is derived from granite slabs. Granite is a very dense variety of natural stone that resists cracking, which can result in types of stone which allow moisture penetration that makes many types of stone to be susceptible to freeze-thaw cycles. The surface of the stone cladding tends to reflect irregular contours, much like traditional masonry. But, the backing of each piece is flat. Cladding is fixed to a substrate in a staggered pattern, much like brick is laid.
FOAM PANEL STONE SIDING
A light weight alternative to real stone, foam panel siding or faux stone veneer siding, which is made out of a polyurethane, may be the answer. And because this type of stone-like siding is created to be installed in panels, and not by on a stone-by-stone basis, installation is more straight-forward as well. As far as appearances go, the technology that goes into this option of stone siding is quite remarkable. Only a touching will reveal that this siding is not natural. You also might be surprised to realize that this stone is made to be quite durable.
STONE SIDING INSTALLTION
You can install natural stone directly on porous concrete, stone, or block. Or if the surface is smooth, you can attach metal lath and a scratch masonry coat to provide a surface for the stone to grip. Grout is added between the stones or the stones can go grout-free for a dry-stack appearance. Real stone cannot be installed on drywall or other thin materials. Natural stone is difficult to cut and adds to the labor. On the other hand, manufactured veneer stone installs generally the same as natural stone, with lath, a scratch coat, mortar, and grout. The main differences, though, are weight and density. Manufactured stone is far easier to handle and cut than natural stone because it is porous and light-weight.
